Ranchi, November 7, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The death of tribal activist Nisha Bhagat has triggered a political confrontation in Jharkhand, with the BJP accusing the Hemant Soren government of failing to protect her despite alleged threats and harassment, while the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has promised action against anyone found responsible.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday described Bhagat as a fearless tribal woman who had campaigned to protect tribal land and girls. He alleged that she had faced repeated attacks but was not provided adequate security by the state government.

Singh also questioned the silence of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her death, asking why they had not spoken out.

BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo rejected the suggestion that Bhagat had died by suicide, alleging that she had been subjected to sustained harassment and pressure. He claimed her Facebook livestream shortly before her death contained details of the difficulties she faced and accused the state government of allowing people to target her.

Shahdeo also said Bhagat had campaigned against religious conversion and had clarified that she was not associated with either the BJP or the RSS. The BJP has demanded a response from Chief Minister Hemant Soren and action against those Bhagat allegedly named in her livestream.

Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi said Bhagat had referred to Soren, the officer-in-charge of Pithoria police station and Ajay Tirkey during the broadcast.

The JMM, meanwhile, expressed grief over her death. Party leader Manoj Pandey said criticism of the government did not make Bhagat an adversary, stressing that everyone had the right to express their views in a democracy.

Pandey assured that those found guilty would face action, while innocent people would not be falsely implicated. He said details of the case could emerge in the coming days.

According to the information available, Bhagat went live on Facebook shortly before her death and spoke about feeling isolated after what she described as a prolonged struggle. She also expressed concern about the impact her actions would have on her parents.

Police are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. The allegations made by political leaders remain to be independently verified.
