Apple on Monday unveiled its next-generation iPad mini, featuring an 8.5-inch OLED display, the new A20 Pro processor, a slimmer design and enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities powered by iPadOS 27.
The new tablet features a larger display than its predecessor while maintaining a similar overall footprint through slimmer bezels. Apple said its Super Retina XDR display offers more than twice the peak brightness of the previous-generation model, deeper blacks, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and support for the P3 wide colour gamut.
An optional nano-texture display is also available to help reduce glare in brightly lit environments.
Measuring just 5.4 mm in thickness, the new iPad mini is Apple’s thinnest mini tablet yet. It comes in midnight and starlight finishes and carries an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.
The device is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built using a 2-nanometre process. According to the company, the processor delivers up to 60 per cent faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics performance and up to 4.5 times faster AI processing compared with the previous generation.
The chip features a seven-core GPU with Neural Accelerators integrated into each core. Apple said the top-end 512GB variant also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine to support advanced on-device AI workloads.
The new iPad mini introduces an Acoustic Display system that integrates specially designed woofers and tweeters into the display structure. Apple said the system delivers improved audio quality, higher volume levels and stronger bass response.
The tablet’s camera system has also been upgraded. A 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera is positioned along the landscape edge to support video calls and online meetings.
At the rear, the device features a 12-megapixel Wide camera with Smart HDR 4, 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second and an Adaptive True Tone flash designed to improve photography and document scanning.
Connectivity upgrades include Apple’s new N1 wireless networking chip, which enables support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread technology.
Cellular models feature Apple’s next-generation C2 modem. The company said the modem delivers up to 50 per cent faster cellular data speeds while improving power efficiency.
The new iPad mini runs iPadOS 27 and introduces the latest version of Apple Intelligence alongside enhanced Siri AI capabilities.
Apple said Siri can understand personal context, analyse on-screen content, assist users across messages, emails and photos, and answer questions on a broad range of topics.
The software also includes upgraded AI-powered photo-editing tools, a new Image Playground app and Safari’s Notify Me feature, which allows users to track changes on websites.
With its larger OLED display, upgraded processing power, improved connectivity and expanded AI capabilities, the new iPad mini combines portability with features designed for productivity, communication, entertainment and creative tasks.
