All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal on Monday expressed confidence that the Congress would win the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and form the next government, promising to restore peace, strengthen law and order and make the state drug-free.

Addressing a press conference at Punjab Congress Bhawan, Venugopal said party leaders and workers would contest the elections unitedly. He accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of pushing Punjab towards a crisis over nearly five years, citing alleged deterioration in law and order, the spread of drug trafficking and persistent unemployment among young people.

Venugopal alleged that political patronage for drug traffickers and inaction by the police and administration had weakened public confidence. He said the Congress would work to bring Punjab out of the situation and put the state back on the path of progress.

He also announced that Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, would visit Sangrur on November 4 to launch the Congress’s campaign for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

Describing Rahul Gandhi’s relationship with Punjab as a deep emotional bond, Venugopal said the Congress leader shared a close connection with the state and its people, who held him in great affection.

Venugopal said the Congress was committed to democratic values and that the views of party leaders and workers were given importance in organisational decisions. As part of preparations for the Assembly elections, the party held four key meetings on Monday, focusing on election strategy, strengthening the organisation and outlining its roadmap for the coming months.

Punjab Congress president Sardar Pargat Singh said party leaders and workers had come together to protect Punjab’s interests and work towards saving the state from its current challenges. He said the Congress would expose what it described as the anti-people policies and failures of the AAP government before voters.

Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot said the party would enter the Assembly elections with thorough preparation and a strong strategy. He said the meetings chaired by Venugopal had focused on election readiness and organisational strengthening throughout the day.

Pilot added that preparations had also begun for Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Sangrur on November 4, which is expected to mark a major step in the party’s campaign preparations.

Senior Congress leaders present at the press conference included Punjab Assembly Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, former Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, former Punjab Congress president and MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, MP Dr Amar Singh, former minister Vijay Inder Singla and other senior party leaders.

With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the Congress leadership indicated that unity, organisational consolidation, law and order, drug abuse and employment would be central to its political campaign in Punjab.
