Chandigarh, October 26, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha and Youth Akali Dal president Sarabjit Singh Jhinjer did not appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Monday for questioning in connection with the rape case registered against former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member and former SAD vice-president Amarjit Singh Chawla.

Both Akali leaders had been summoned to appear before the SIT at the Punjab Police Officers Institute in Sector 32, Chandigarh, on October 26.

Senior Akali leader and party spokesperson S.S. Dharni, who is also an advocate, appeared before the SIT on their behalf and sought additional time for both leaders to join the investigation, citing different reasons for their absence.

It was not immediately clear whether the SIT had granted their request or fixed fresh dates for questioning.

Both Leaders Had Been Summoned Earlier

Valtoha had been directed to appear before the investigating team at 11 am on Monday, while Jhinjer was scheduled to appear at 2 pm.

The two leaders had previously been summoned for October 19.

Valtoha did not appear on that occasion, while Jhinjer sought an alternative date for questioning. The SIT subsequently issued fresh summons requiring both to appear on October 26.

Their latest absence means that investigators have yet to question the two leaders in response to these summons.

SIT Investigating FIR Registered at Anandpur Sahib

The investigation concerns FIR No. 149 registered at Police Station Sri Anandpur Sahib in connection with allegations against Amarjit Singh Chawla.

The case involves allegations of sexual assault made by a woman who had reportedly arrived from Bahrain.

The SIT is examining the allegations and related circumstances, including possible connections involving political figures.

The summoning of Valtoha and Jhinjer forms part of the ongoing investigation and does not, by itself, establish any criminal involvement on their part.

Three-Member SIT Headed by Faridkot SSP

The three-member Special Investigation Team is headed by Faridkot Senior Superintendent of Police Gurbans Singh Bains.

The other members are SSP Vigilance, Mohali, Simranjit Singh Lang, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Karan Singh Sandhu, posted at Mullanpur Dakha.

The team is investigating the allegations and examining material relevant to the case.

Further developments are expected once the SIT decides on the request for additional time and the next dates for questioning.
