Delhi Police have arrested a 72-year-old woman for allegedly stealing a foreign national’s bag from a shop in the Paharganj area and recovered ₹1.85 lakh in Indian currency and $2,600 from her possession.
The accused, identified as Savita Gandhi, alias Saroj Gandhi, was arrested from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi on October 24, police said. She was allegedly involved in the theft while the foreign national was shopping in Paharganj.
The incident came to light on October 21, when the victim filed an online complaint. The stolen bag reportedly contained a passport, visa documents, $2,600, ₹2.5 lakh, three credit cards and a Samsung mobile phone.
Following the complaint, a team from Police Post Sangatrashan under Paharganj police station launched an investigation. Police analysed footage from more than 100 CCTV cameras in and around the area and used local intelligence to identify the suspect.
After tracing her whereabouts, investigators raided a location in Uttam Nagar and apprehended her. Police subsequently recovered the Indian currency and US dollars, along with the clothes she allegedly wore during the theft.
During interrogation, the woman allegedly admitted to her involvement in the crime, according to police.
Police said Gandhi had 14 previous criminal involvements, including cases registered at different police stations across Delhi, and had recently been released from Tihar Jail. Investigators alleged that she used her appearance as a senior citizen to avoid suspicion while committing thefts.
Police are also verifying details related to opening her history sheet and a proposal for her externment.
A case has been registered at Paharganj police station under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further legal proceedings are underway.
