Washington, October 15, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

US President Donald Trump has accused Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood and endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched Senate race ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Speaking to reporters in Arizona before departing for a campaign rally in Montana, Trump alleged that El-Sayed had previously acknowledged membership of the Islamist organisation. However, he offered no evidence to support the accusation, and El-Sayed has denied having any links to the group.

“Yeah, he’s a member of the Muslim Brotherhood,” Trump said when asked about the candidate’s alleged connections. He claimed El-Sayed had been a “proud member” years earlier.

Trump questioned whether someone he accused of belonging to the organisation should serve in Congress, particularly on committees dealing with national security.

“And you can’t have a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Congress being on one of our security committees, right?” he said.

The President subsequently praised Rogers, a former congressman challenging El-Sayed in the Michigan contest, describing him as an “amazing candidate” and saying the country needed someone like him.

“We don’t need the Muslim Brotherhood in, uh, as a senator,” Trump added.

El-Sayed rejected the allegations during an October 11 television interview, denying that either he or his family had ties to the organisation. The issue had also surfaced during his debate with Rogers.

The Democratic candidate has argued that attacks focusing on his religion and family background are intended to divert attention from economic issues facing voters.

Trump’s remarks came as Republicans seek to retain control of Congress in the November elections. He said he planned to visit Michigan in the coming days, alongside campaign stops in Ohio and Texas, to help mobilise Republican voters.

The Michigan contest has drawn national attention because of its potential implications for control of the Senate. The campaign has featured sharp exchanges over national security, foreign policy and the candidates’ political records.

El-Sayed, a former Detroit public health official, is seeking to become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. The controversy has also brought questions of religious identity, political representation and national security into focus during the campaign.
