Lucknow, October 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday backed the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, saying that identifying and removing ineligible entries in accordance with the rules is essential for India’s security, unity and integrity.

In a post on X, Yogi described SIR as an important exercise to strengthen India’s democratic system. He said systematic verification of entries relating to deceased voters, people who have permanently shifted and duplicate registrations was necessary.

“Identifying ineligible names illegally included in the voter list and removing them as per rules is essential for India’s security, unity and integrity,” he said.

The Chief Minister also urged young people who have completed 18 years of age to ensure that their names are included in the electoral rolls, calling for greater participation in building a clean and transparent voter list.

Yogi’s remarks come amid intensified opposition to the SIR exercise and demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Opposition parties and other groups have alleged that the revision could lead to the exclusion of eligible voters and have questioned the manner in which the exercise is being conducted. The Election Commission has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that the revision is being carried out according to established procedures.

Protests were held in Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday as opposition groups stepped up their campaign against the poll panel chief and the SIR exercise.

The issue has also reached the Supreme Court. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant is scheduled to hear two petitions challenging the functioning of the Election Commission in connection with SIR and questioning decisions allegedly taken without the concurrence of the other two Election Commissioners.

The petitions seek, among other reliefs, scrutiny of the decision-making process and challenge the legality of actions allegedly taken unilaterally by the CEC.
