The UAE has launched an investigation into the incident involving Flydubai flight FZ1073, which made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, with authorities examining whether it had any connection to terrorist activity or intent.
UAE Attorney-General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has ordered the formation of a specialised investigation team comprising members of the Public Prosecution to establish the circumstances, causes and motives behind the incident, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
The investigation will examine whether the incident involved any possible terrorist connection, prior planning or direction.
The ministry said UAE judicial authorities have jurisdiction over the case because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and flies under its flag. Under applicable UAE legislation, the country’s laws apply to crimes committed aboard the aircraft, even when they occur outside its territory.

The UAE also expressed appreciation to Saudi Arabian authorities for their cooperation and handling of the incident. The ministry urged the public to rely on official statements and avoid circulating speculation or unverified information until the investigation is completed and its findings are announced.
The Flydubai flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel, on Wednesday when the co-pilot allegedly attempted to sabotage the aircraft and stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, who reportedly intervened to stop him.
According to reports, the Boeing 737 was cruising at around 34,000 feet when it began descending rapidly, at approximately 23,000 feet per minute, before reaching an altitude of about 15,600 feet. Machchhar reportedly resisted the co-pilot and opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to overpower him. The aircraft subsequently made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Earlier on Thursday, India’s Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, met Machchhar’s family in Dubai and assured them of the Indian government’s full support.
In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs said the ambassador had conveyed the government’s support and assistance for the captain’s welfare and well-being.
