Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey is confident that the Hockey India League (HIL) will be held in December 2026 and January 2027, following discussions with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Hockey India officials and franchise representatives.

Tirkey said the discussions had received a positive response from the Sports Minister, with all stakeholders aligned on taking the league forward.

“I had a word with the Sports Minister and got a very positive response from him. We had a meeting with the franchises also, and everyone put forward their views. We are working in the same direction. Hockey India League will definitely happen,” Tirkey said.

He added that the league would continue to develop as a platform for Indian hockey players, particularly young talent, by providing opportunities to compete alongside some of the world’s leading international stars.

The HIL features both men’s and women’s competitions and offers Indian players valuable exposure to international playing standards. Tirkey said the experience gained through the league plays an important role in their development.

“Hockey India League is important for both men’s and women’s hockey, especially for young players. It provides them with the required exposure, as they get to play with the world’s best players. Through this, hockey is getting a boost in India,” he said.

Tirkey also highlighted the benefits of young Indian players sharing dressing rooms with international stars, participating in match preparations and learning about their approach to the game.

“Sharing the dressing room, planning and preparing for matches with foreign players gives our young players the desired confidence. They get to understand how the world’s best players prepare and approach the game, and this experience helps them develop both as players and as individuals,” he added.

Tirkey described the league as an important platform for nurturing young players and supporting the continued development of Indian men’s and women’s hockey.
