Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon has welcomed the Centre’s increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for six notified Rabi crops for the 2027-28 season, describing the move as a step towards ensuring remunerative returns for farmers.
In a statement issued from the BJP office in Chandigarh, Dhillon said the MSP hike could also encourage crop diversification by making alternative crops more attractive to farmers.
“The decision of the Narendra Modi government is not merely about increasing MSP; it will also encourage crop diversification. By providing a higher increase in the MSP of crops such as lentils and sesame, the government has sent a clear message to encourage farmers to diversify their cropping patterns and promote the cultivation of these crops,” he said.
Dhillon also questioned Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the state government’s approach to ensuring MSP for crops beyond the existing procurement system. He cited Haryana, where the BJP-led government provides MSP support for 23 crops under the Bhavantar scheme, which also covers vegetables.
Referring to Punjab’s earlier announcement of MSP for moong, Dhillon claimed that the decision had not been effectively implemented on the ground.
He said that if the BJP forms the government in Punjab, it would ensure MSP support for 23 crops, which, he added, would provide farmers with greater price security and encourage diversification.
Dhillon also rejected claims that the Centre intended to abolish MSP, arguing that annual increases in support prices demonstrated the government’s commitment to farmers’ interests.
