The Customs Department has imposed a penalty of Rs 89 crore on actor Ranya Rao in an alleged gold smuggling case, while Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Thursday said he was awaiting complete details before commenting on the action.
“I don’t know the complete information about the imposition of the fine. I will react once I get the information,” Kharge told reporters in Bengaluru.
The penalty was imposed through an order issued by Customs Joint Commissioner Sandeep, accompanied by a 399-page investigation report. The department has directed Rao to pay the amount in connection with the alleged smuggling of gold from abroad.
According to the Customs investigation, Rao, her associate Tarun and three other individuals allegedly smuggled a total of 113 kg of gold from foreign countries between March 7, 2024, and February 18, 2025.
The case came to light on March 3, 2025, when the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested Rao at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Officials allegedly recovered 14 kg of gold from her possession.
A case was subsequently registered under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) Act, and an investigation was launched into the alleged smuggling network.
Rao was granted bail by the Special Court for Economic Offences in February 2026. The Customs Department has now issued its penalty order as part of the proceedings in the case.
