The dispute over removal of a portion of Ujjain’s historic Shahi Masjid for a road-widening project was resolved through an overnight agreement between the administration and community representatives, City Qazi Khali Kurre Rahman said on Monday, even as a crowd gathered at the site following the circulation of messages on social media.
In a video appeal, the City Qazi said the matter had been settled amicably and urged people not to visit the site unnecessarily or act on rumours. He said the work agreed upon was already being carried out.
Under the understanding, members associated with the mosque would themselves remove the section of the structure measuring approximately 9 feet by 4 feet that falls within the alignment of the road being widened between Kanthal Square and Gopal Mandir. The road expansion is part of preparations for Simhastha 2028. The Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier allowed the authorities to proceed with partial removal of the structure for the road-widening project.
Despite the agreement, a crowd gathered at the location on Monday morning amid messages circulating about the issue. Stone-pelting was reported and police used tear gas to disperse the gathering. Heavy security was deployed around the area.
District Collector Roshan Singh said the situation was brought under control and that the removal work being undertaken by the mosque committee was progressing under a security perimeter. Ujjain SP Pradeep Sharma also said the work was being carried out with community consent and that Muslim community leaders were appealing for calm.
Authorities and community representatives have appealed to residents to cooperate with the administration and avoid spreading or acting on unverified information.
