Indian boxer Priya Ghanghas assured herself of a medal in the women’s 60kg category at the Asian Games after defeating Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova 5-0 in the quarterfinals at Nishio Gymnasium on Monday.
Priya recovered from a 2-3 deficit in the opening round to dominate the next two rounds, with all five judges awarding her the bout. Three judges scored it 29-27, while the other two gave her a 30-26 victory.
The opening round was closely contested, with both boxers landing punches after a measured start. Samadova, a bronze medallist at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games in the 57kg category, edged the round 3-2.
Priya stepped up her aggression in the second round, connecting with effective combinations as Samadova was also penalised a point. The Indian won the round unanimously and carried that momentum into the final three minutes.
Samadova pressed hard in the third round, but Priya responded with well-timed punches and capitalised when her opponent was on the back foot to secure another 5-0 round victory.
Priya will now face China’s Yang Chengyu in the semifinals on Wednesday, with a place in the gold medal bout at stake. Yang is a two-time World Championship medallist, having won gold in 2023 and bronze in 2025.
Priya’s victory marked India’s fifth confirmed boxing medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Earlier on Monday, Lovlina Borgohain assured herself of a medal in the women’s 75kg category with a 5-0 quarterfinal win over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon. The 2023 Hangzhou Games silver medallist has now secured a second Asian Games medal.
Ankush Panghal and Parveen Hooda had also confirmed medals in their respective categories. Ankush defeated Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in the men’s 80kg quarterfinal, while Parveen overcame Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova by the same margin in the women’s 65kg category.
