A 60-year-old man was killed in a suspected wild elephant attack near Anchepalya, off Mysuru Road in Bengaluru, early Monday morning, prompting the Forest Department to launch a search operation to locate the animal.
The deceased, identified as Nagaraj, a resident of Anchepalya, was reportedly out for his morning walk around 5.30 a.m. when the incident occurred. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries.
The attack was reported from an area behind Rajarajeshwari Medical College near Kengeri, which falls under the Kaggalipura Forest zone. Forest officials suspect the elephant may have entered the locality from the nearby Bannerghatta forest region.
Police and residents suspect an elephant attack after two compound walls at the spot were found collapsed. CCTV footage from the area has also captured an elephant moving through the locality at around 5.11 a.m.
Officials have collected information about another person who was reportedly out for a morning walk and narrowly escaped encountering the elephant. The animal disappeared after the attack, and forest officials are searching the area.
The incident has triggered concern among residents, with many reportedly reluctant to venture outside. Family members and villagers also staged a protest at RR Hospital, alleging negligence by the Forest Department and demanding an immediate visit by the Forest Minister and compensation for Nagaraj’s family, which has four daughters.
Nagaraj’s daughter Shobha said the family had been going for morning walks almost every day for about three years and had never encountered an elephant in the area before.
A case has been registered at Kumbalgodu Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
The incident comes amid continuing concerns over human-elephant conflict in Karnataka. The state government has also tightened safety measures around elephant tourism following the death of a 33-year-old Chennai tourist at Dubare Elephant Camp in Kodagu, where she was fatally injured after a captive elephant fell on her during a clash between two elephants.
