Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) candidate Yash Dabas was elected President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) on Saturday, with the student outfit securing three of the four central posts.
Dabas defeated Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate Vijay Shankar Meena by 2,053 votes. Dabas polled 24,576 votes, while Meena secured 22,523 votes.
Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the Vice-President’s post, while ABVP’s Riya Chhawadi was elected Secretary and Lakshyaraj Singh won the Joint Secretary’s post.
Dabas said the victory represented “harmony, patriotism and organisational strength” and thanked students for supporting the ABVP.
The election recorded a voter turnout of 40.46 per cent across 52 polling centres, the highest in three years. Last year’s turnout was 39.5 per cent. Voting was conducted in two phases to accommodate students attending morning and evening classes.
Ahead of the university-level results, ABVP candidates had also secured key positions in several college-level elections, including at Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Sri Aurobindo College (Morning), Dr B.R. Ambedkar College, Bharati College and Shivaji College.
At Ramjas College, ABVP candidates won the posts of President, Secretary, Central Councillor and Internal Complaints Committee.
Delhi University has 91 colleges across its North and South campuses, though 52 colleges and faculties directly participate in the DUSU electoral process. Institutions including St Stephen’s College, Lady Shri Ram College and Jesus and Mary College do not participate in the DUSU elections.
Counting was held under heightened security arrangements. The Delhi High Court has also barred victory processions following the results, directing the Delhi Police to prevent such processions on roads, in hostels and inside college premises.
