The much-awaited biopic of legendary Carnatic singer and Bharat Ratna awardee M.S. Subbulakshmi is expected to reach theatres after August 2027, producer Allu Aravind has said.
Speaking exclusively to IANS on the sidelines of the film’s launch event at the Music Academy, Aravind, who is one of the three producers of the project, said audiences could expect the film “anytime post August 2027”.
Titled ‘MS – A Legacy on Screen’, the biopic will be directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, with Rashmika Mandanna playing the lead role. Music for the film will be composed by Anirudh.
Tinnanuri said the team had spent the past year researching Subbulakshmi’s life and gradually realised that the story was about much more than her achievements as a musician.
“For the last one year, our entire team was constantly living with one name, M.S. Subbulakshmi Amma,” the director said.
He said the initial focus had been on portraying one of India’s greatest musicians, but the research led the team towards the “extraordinary life” behind her public achievements.
According to Tinnanuri, the film will explore Subbulakshmi not only as an iconic performer but also as a daughter, artiste and woman who experienced dreams, success, failure and sacrifice.
The director also highlighted the relevance of her journey for younger audiences, contrasting the lifelong discipline and patience behind Subbulakshmi’s achievements with the fast-paced culture of instant fame and social media recognition.
Tinnanuri also acknowledged the responsibility involved in bringing the legendary singer’s life to the screen.
He said every aspect of the film, from its script to individual frames, was being approached with “deep respect and love” for Subbulakshmi and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work on her story.
The film is being produced by Allu Aravind’s Geetha Arts in association with Rockline Entertainment and Bunny Vas Works.
