Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the India-Germany Strategic Partnership during a telephonic conversation, with discussions covering trade, investment, defence, clean energy, advanced technologies and talent mobility.
The conversation comes as India and Germany mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. Modi described Germany as an important pillar of India’s engagement with Europe and a valued partner in promoting global peace, stability and prosperity.
“Had a warm and productive conversation with Chancellor Friedrich Merz,” Modi said in a post on X, adding that both countries had reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Strategic Partnership across key areas.
The Prime Minister said the two countries would continue to deepen their forward-looking partnership for the benefit of their people.
The latest conversation follows a series of high-level engagements between the two countries. Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met German MP Jurgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, in New Delhi. Their discussions covered developments in the Gulf and West Asia, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the India-Germany Strategic Partnership. Germany’s Ambassador to India, Jasper Wieck, also attended the meeting.
In June, Modi met Merz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, where the two leaders discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders reviewed progress in bilateral engagements and welcomed renewed momentum in the Strategic Partnership following Merz’s visit to India and the conclusion of India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations earlier this year.
They also discussed regional and global developments of mutual interest, including the situation in West Asia and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
