India enjoyed a double podium finish at the World Shooting Para Sport Championships in Changwon on Thursday, with Mona Agarwal winning silver in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1 event and two-time Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara claiming bronze.
Mona, who won bronze at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, secured a quota place for India for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics with her second-place finish. The 22-year-old Serbian Kristina Trifunovic won gold with a score of 250.2, narrowly edging Mona, who finished on 250.0. Avani took bronze with 229.4.
The silver marked Mona’s maiden World Championships medal. She had previously won silver at the World Cup at the same venue last year.
For Avani, the bronze came on her return to the World Championships after a four-year absence. She had missed the Lima 2023 edition and made her Worlds debut at Cheongju in South Korea in 2018.
Avani, a two-time Paralympic champion and three-time Paralympic medallist in rifle events, has won back-to-back R2 gold medals at the Paralympics and also claimed her first World Championships titles in R2 and R8. She is familiar with the Changwon range, having competed at three World Cups there and won gold in 2022.
The Changwon 2026 WSPS World Championships feature 324 shooters from 53 nations, with LA28 qualification quotas also at stake. The championship will award 24 quota places — 13 for men and 11 for women — with the top two ranked athletes in each medal event who are not already qualified earning a quota place for their country.
Shooting Para sport at LA28 will feature 13 medal events — three men’s, three women’s and seven open events. A total of 150 quota places will be available, comprising 75 for men, 60 for women and 15 gender-free places.
