Telangana Panchayati Raj Minister Danasari Seethakka on Wednesday alleged that some Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs misbehaved with women legislators from their own party during a recent protest outside the state Assembly.
Seethakka claimed that BRS MLAs Sabitha Indra Reddy, Sunitha Laxma Reddy and Kova Laxmi were mistreated by male colleagues during Monday’s protest. She alleged that Gangula Kamalakar and Sudheer Reddy pushed the women legislators from behind, with Kamalakar moving forward after pushing them.
The minister released videos to support her allegations and termed the alleged conduct “shameful”, questioning why male legislators needed to push their female colleagues.
The incident took place when BRS MLAs and MLCs were stopped by police at the Assembly gate during a protest over being denied entry for wearing black T-shirts carrying slogans.
The BRS has alleged that former ministers Sabitha Indra Reddy and Sunitha Laxma Reddy were manhandled during the incident and has demanded action against the police personnel involved.
Police have registered two cases against BRS leaders, including Working President K. T. Rama Rao and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly T. Harish Rao. The cases include allegations of assaulting police personnel, obstructing them from performing their duties and making inappropriate remarks against women police officers.
A woman constable, whose complaint led to one of the cases, alleged that BRS legislators made objectionable remarks towards women police personnel. She also alleged that some legislators removed their T-shirts and stood semi-naked close to the women officers, causing discomfort and embarrassment.
The constable further alleged that the legislators attempted to forcibly enter the Assembly by pushing and jostling women police personnel.
Seethakka also met women police personnel who were allegedly injured during the confrontation and enquired about their health.
“Misbehaving with women police on duty is highly deplorable. They showed me photos & videos and said they were touched indecently. Our Government will not tolerate any act that violates the dignity of women,” Seethakka said in a post on X.
The BRS, however, has rejected the allegations and termed the photographs cited in the controversy as morphed and AI-generated.
