US Sanctions 27 Iranian Airlines, Targets Firms in Third Countries

Washington, September 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The US Department of the Treasury has sanctioned 27 Iranian airlines, placing them on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) List as Washington seeks to intensify economic pressure on Tehran.

The Treasury Department said the measures target Iran’s remaining commercial airlines, which it accused of supporting the Iranian regime’s “destabilising activities”. According to the department, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has used ostensibly private airlines to procure and transport weapons and move personnel.

The US first sanctioned Iran’s Mahan Air in October 2011 and subsequently targeted several companies described as its general sales agents, including in measures announced on July 30.

The latest action also targets alleged front companies, foreign intermediaries and deceptive transshipment routes that Washington said Iran uses to acquire US-origin aircraft and sensitive technology.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated four companies based in Türkiye, Malaysia and Kazakhstan, accusing them of providing cargo services or acting as general sales agents for Mahan Air.

OFAC also suspended authorisations that had permitted overflights and allowed non-US airlines to operate US-origin or US-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran.

Separately, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued an alert urging financial institutions to report procurement networks supporting Iran’s aviation sector.

The Treasury Department said Mahan Air received at least three Boeing 777 aircraft during the summer of 2026, which were allegedly diverted through the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The sanctions come amid a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday that Iran would continue its resistance until what he called the “aggressors” were brought to “complete regret”. In a post on X, he reiterated Iran’s opposition to war while saying the country would continue defending itself against aggression and protecting the rights of the Iranian people.

The latest US sanctions add to Washington’s broader campaign to restrict Iran’s aviation, procurement and financial networks.
