As the death toll in the Satya Niketan building collapse rose to seven, the families of two victims made a compassionate decision to donate their loved ones’ corneas at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), potentially helping restore sight to patients awaiting corneal transplants.
According to AIIMS, the families of two of the seven deceased victims consented to cornea donation. The donated corneas may be used for patients requiring corneal transplantation.
The decision came amid immense grief following one of Delhi’s recent major building collapse tragedies. Despite losing their loved ones, the two families chose to donate their corneas, offering the possibility of renewed vision to others.
The five-storeyed PG building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area collapsed at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Rescue teams pulled 12 people from the debris during an operation that continued for more than 24 hours.
Seven of those rescued subsequently died while undergoing treatment, while five injured victims remain hospitalised. Three of the injured are reportedly in critical condition.
The deceased comprised five students and two labourers. The students had been residing in the Satya Niketan area while pursuing their studies.
The tragedy has also resulted in arrests and administrative action. Delhi Police arrested the building owner and two members of her family, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended five officials in connection with the collapse.
Amid the grief and scrutiny following the incident, the decision by the two families to donate their loved ones’ corneas has emerged as an act of compassion. Their gesture could potentially help patients awaiting corneal transplantation and turn a devastating loss into an opportunity for others to regain their sight.
