A man accused of killing his 25-year-old wife in Guwahati’s Hatigaon area surrendered before police and was subsequently arrested, officials said on Monday.
The accused, identified as Ramanujan Goswami, is the prime accused in the alleged murder of his wife, Riya Talukdar Goswami. Police reportedly recovered the woman’s severed head packed in a polythene bag inside a refrigerator at the couple’s flat, while her fingers were also allegedly cut off.
According to police, the alleged murder followed frequent disputes between the couple. One of the reported reasons for their quarrels was the victim’s alleged extramarital affair.
Police said Ramanujan allegedly attacked Riya with a machete during an altercation, resulting in her death. A machete suspected to have been used in the crime was also recovered from the premises.
Anurag Sharma, ADCP (East) of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, confirmed that Ramanujan was the prime accused in the case. Police said he surrendered at Hatigaon Police Station and was taken into custody.
The couple had reportedly married around six months ago and were living together at a flat in the Basisthapur area of Guwahati.
The crime came to light after neighbours alerted authorities about a foul smell coming from the apartment. A police team reached the flat and recovered the victim’s remains.
The body was sent to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination.
Police said the accused allegedly confessed during questioning. However, officials stressed that the investigation was still at a preliminary stage and his statement would be assessed alongside other evidence in accordance with due legal process.
Ramanujan is expected to be taken on police remand for detailed interrogation. Investigators are examining the alleged motive, sequence of events and circumstances in which the body was kept inside the refrigerator. Forensic teams are also expected to examine evidence collected from the flat as the investigation progresses.
