At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded in a traffic accident in western Iran, state-run IRIB reported.
The incident took place on an intercity road connecting Sanandaj County in Kurdestan province with Hamedan County in Hamedan province, according to Babak Hodaei, head of emergency medical services at Kurdestan University of Medical Sciences.
Hodaei said the explosion triggered fires in several vehicles in the vicinity. Rescue teams transported the injured to a hospital in Sanandaj, while emergency and rescue operations continued at the scene.
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region. In July, an oil tanker reportedly exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine. Iranian media reported that the vessel had allegedly deviated from the route designated by Iran and entered an area outside the safe maritime traffic corridor despite earlier warnings.
The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is a major global energy corridor through which oil and liquefied natural gas from leading Gulf producers reach international markets.
Meanwhile, the confrontation between Washington and Tehran saw another escalation on Saturday. The US military said its forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers on September 5 after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles towards two US Navy warships operating in regional waters.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded multiple Iranian attacks and reported no injuries among US personnel.
“US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 5, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles toward two U.S. Navy warships patrolling regional waters,” CENTCOM said.
