Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed that it struck three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three US-affiliated vessels in other locations in retaliation for attacks on Iranian oil tankers earlier in the day.
In a statement published by the IRGC’s official news outlet Sepah News, the IRGC Navy said the three tankers targeted in the Strait of Hormuz had been using what it described as an “unauthorized” route. It said the other three vessels were struck in separate areas.
The IRGC Navy warned vessels operating in the Gulf and around the Strait of Hormuz against being “deceived” by the US military. It also cautioned ships against attempting to transit the waterway through what it termed unauthorised routes, warning that such vessels could be targeted.
Earlier, Iran’s state-run IRIB reported that three Iranian oil tankers had come under attack by the US military off Iran’s southern coast.
Following the reported attacks, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesman for Iran’s main military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, warned Washington against continuing attacks on Iranian vessels or maintaining a naval blockade against Iran.
“If the malice and insecurity against and harassment of Iranian ships, as well as the anti-Iran naval blockade continue, the strikes by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran against US military vessels in the region will become more severe than before, and there is a possibility of their expansion,” Zolfaghari said in a statement carried by Iranian media.
US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said the US military could soon strike Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified site near the Natanz enrichment facility. Trump said the US could “hit Pickaxe very soon”, referring to the underground facility where Washington says Iran has moved part of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Trump also sought to characterise the confrontation as limited, calling it a “military conflict” rather than a war and describing it as “small potatoes” for the United States.
The latest escalation follows US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran subsequently restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, barring vessels linked to the United States or Israel, while US forces imposed a naval blockade targeting vessels travelling to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas.
