Women legislators from 22 states will come together in Faridabad, Haryana, on September 7 for a two-day capacity-building workshop focused on strengthening women’s leadership and promoting gender-responsive governance.
Organised by the National Commission for Women (NCW) under its flagship “She is a Changemaker” initiative, the workshop will bring women legislators together to discuss key aspects of leadership, governance and women’s participation in public decision-making.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will lead discussions at the pan-India workshop. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will also attend the programme.
The workshop will cover effective public leadership and decision-making, gender budgeting, protection of women’s rights, support mechanisms for women in distress and effective implementation of women-centric welfare schemes.
The role of Self Help Groups in promoting women’s economic empowerment and grassroots leadership will also be discussed.
Rahatkar said women’s meaningful participation in governance was essential for creating an inclusive, responsive and equitable society. She noted that women legislators bring valuable perspectives and lived experiences to policymaking and public decision-making.
“Gender-responsive governance is not only about policies for women; it is about ensuring that women are equal partners in shaping the policies and decisions that define our society,” the NCW Chairperson said.
The workshop will provide a platform for women legislators to exchange experiences, strengthen their leadership capabilities and examine effective approaches to gender-responsive governance. It will also seek to deepen understanding of policy, institutional and implementation mechanisms that can strengthen women’s participation in public life and governance.
As part of the “She is a Changemaker” initiative, the NCW has conducted more than 200 capacity-building programmes for elected women representatives across the country. These programmes are aimed at enhancing their leadership capabilities and enabling more effective participation in governance and public life.
