5.5 Kg Suspected Hydroponic Marijuana Seized at Ahmedabad Airport; Passenger Arrested

Ahmedabad, September 5, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Ahmedabad Customs officials have seized 5,519.7 grams of suspected hydroponic marijuana from a passenger arriving from Ho Chi Minh City after allegedly finding the contraband concealed in food packaging inside his hand baggage.

The seizure was carried out by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Ahmedabad Customs following passenger profiling and X-ray screening. The passenger, a Mumbai resident, arrived at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on September 4 aboard VietJet Air flight VJ-1805 from Ho Chi Minh City.

During a detailed examination of his hand baggage, Customs officers recovered 24 aluminium foil-wrapped packets containing a green-coloured substance. According to Ahmedabad Customs, the packets had allegedly been hidden inside three cookie boxes and a packet of corn flakes.

A preliminary test using an NDPS field testing kit indicated the presence of ganja (marijuana). The total seized substance weighed 5,519.7 grams.

The contraband was seized under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and the passenger was arrested. Further investigation is underway.

The seizure is the latest in a series of hydroponic marijuana interceptions at Ahmedabad airport involving passengers arriving from Southeast Asia.

On September 2, Customs officials seized 6,073.7 grams of suspected hydroponic marijuana from another passenger arriving from Ho Chi Minh City on the same VJ-1805 service. The substance was allegedly concealed in five vacuum-packed packets placed inside a specially created cavity in a trolley bag. The passenger was arrested under the NDPS Act.

A day later, Customs intercepted a couple from Vadodara arriving from Bangkok and seized 1,928 grams of suspected hydroponic marijuana allegedly concealed in specially created cavities inside two trolley bags. Both passengers were arrested.

The latest case marks the third reported interception of suspected hydroponic marijuana at Ahmedabad airport within four days, with Customs officials uncovering different concealment methods and international routes.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the source of the contraband and the circumstances surrounding its alleged attempted entry into India.
