Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called upon India’s youth to take the lead in building a developed India, placing young people at the centre of his vision for the country’s future during his address at Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC).
Modi, who returned to the Delhi University college after 13 years, said young Indians would be the principal drivers of the country’s transformation. “You will build a developed India,” he told students, underlining his emphasis on youth participation in national development.
The Prime Minister spoke about India’s ambitions in research, innovation and space, including the goal of establishing an Indian space station, while urging young people to pursue long-term and ambitious goals.
Addressing SRCC during its centenary celebrations, Modi highlighted the institution’s alumni and their contributions across fields including economics, business, law, art, leadership and the judiciary. Referring to the college’s prominent alumni as the “OGs” in Gen-Z terminology, he sought to connect his address with the language and outlook of today’s young audience.
Modi also pointed to developments in manufacturing, technology and entrepreneurship as areas offering greater opportunities to India’s youth. He cited the manufacturing of smartphones in India, increased defence production, expanding exports and the growth of fintech as indicators of the country’s changing economic landscape.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the “Made in India” approach, presenting manufacturing, innovation and entrepreneurship as avenues through which young Indians could contribute to national self-reliance and economic strength.
The address also included political references. Modi referred to the “Fragile Five” description used for India in the past, criticism of economic data and the term “Dimagi Naxals”, reflecting his criticism of those he considers opposed to his government’s broader national agenda.
The speech combined the government’s account of economic and technological progress over the past decade with a call to the younger generation to play a leading role in India’s future.
At SRCC, Modi linked development, technology, self-reliance and global ambition, urging young Indians to move beyond being observers of change and become active participants in shaping the country’s trajectory.
