Panic briefly gripped Patna University on Saturday after an unidentified person allegedly hurled a sutli bomb, or crude firecracker, into the campus while Teachers’ Day celebrations were underway across the country.
According to preliminary information, the crude bomb was allegedly thrown from the double-decker bridge on Ashok Rajpath into the area between the Geography and Psychology departments around 12:08 p.m. to 12:10 p.m.
The explosion caused a loud bang and smoke, triggering panic among students and staff. No casualties have been reported so far.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, personnel from Pirbahore police station reached the spot and inspected the area. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was also called in to examine the site and collect evidence.
The forensic team secured the area and began examining the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Police are also scrutinising CCTV footage from the surrounding area, particularly cameras covering the double-decker bridge, to identify the person who allegedly threw the bomb.
Investigators are also trying to establish the motive behind the incident and determine whether it was linked to a personal dispute or any other reason. Police officials said no information about any dispute among students had emerged so far.
Pirbahore police station Station House Officer Rajkumar Singh said police received information that a miscreant had thrown a sutli bomb from the double-decker bridge into the area between the Geography and Psychology departments.
“Police reached the spot immediately after the blast and initiated necessary action. The FSL team has been called, and CCTV footage is being examined,” Singh said.
He added that the investigation was underway and further action would be taken on the basis of evidence collected.
The incident has also raised concerns over security arrangements at the Patna University campus. Similar explosion-related incidents have been reported on the campus in the past, including around periods of university elections.
Police are continuing their investigation to identify the person responsible and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
