Somali forces killed 14 al-Shabaab fighters on Saturday during a security operation in the country’s southwestern region, government officials said.
The Ministry of Defence said troops destroyed bases in Buula Fulay where the militants were hiding during the operation.
“This operation forms part of the ongoing efforts that the Somali National Army is pursuing to eliminate al-Shabaab and ensure security and stability throughout the country,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry praised the army for its courage and sacrifice and said military operations would continue until the militants were fully eradicated.
Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the operation.
The latest operation came a day after heavy clashes between the Somali National Army and allied forces and al-Shabaab fighters in Baidoa.
Last month, the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) killed at least 30 al-Shabaab militants and captured several others after thwarting an attack in Baidoa, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The ministry said SNAF positions came under attack at around 5 a.m. (0200 GMT) by armed elements using vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices.
According to the ministry, the attacking force included al-Shabaab militants and militias loyal to Southwest State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.
“SNAF responded professionally and decisively, repelling the attack and thwarting the assailants’ attempt to destabilise the security and stability of Baidoa,” the ministry said.
Military forces seized weapons and vehicles used in the attack and launched clearance operations to secure the city and track down remaining fighters in parts of Baidoa.
The ministry said it would provide further details about the attack and the outcome of the operation once the clearance operation was completed.
Somali troops have controlled Baidoa since March, when they seized the city, prompting Laftagareen to resign.
