Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan praised transgender doctor Prachi Rathod for her resilience and determination during the latest episode of the quiz-based reality show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.
During her appearance on the show, Prachi spoke about her gender transition, the challenges she faced and the support that helped her pursue her medical education and career.
Bachchan asked her about the support system that stood by her during her transition from a man to a woman. Prachi said that although her parents, siblings and other family members had supported her during childhood, they struggled to accept her decision to undergo the transition.
She said she subsequently found a second family within Hyderabad’s transgender community, where six ‘havelis’ or transgender communities live.
“Ever since childhood, until I told my family that I wanted to undergo this transformation, my parents, siblings and the entire family were there for me. But somewhere, they refused to accept me,” Prachi said.
She recalled how the transgender community in Hyderabad accepted her and encouraged her to continue her education and pursue her ambitions.
“They told me to continue my education, move forward in life and fulfil the dreams my father had for me. They told me that they would always stand by me. Sir, the six havelis in Hyderabad are my first family,” she said.
Prachi also spoke about the difficulties she encountered while looking for employment after her transition. She said she applied for jobs, submitted her resume and appeared for interviews but faced rejection because of her gender.
Bachchan commended her for overcoming these barriers and completing her medical education.
“Prachiji, we can understand that you have faced many difficulties in your life. But what I admire is that you never hesitated to tell the world about what happened to you. You accepted every kind of change and continued to move forward,” he said.
The veteran actor also congratulated Prachi for completing her education and becoming a doctor who treats patients.
“Another thing that I really appreciate is that you completed your education and today, you have become a doctor who treats people. For this, I congratulate you wholeheartedly,” Bachchan said.
