Barely five months into office, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra “Balen” Shah is facing his biggest governance challenge yet after catastrophic flash floods swept through three districts along the country’s Tibet border.
Shah personally visited Nuwakot to assess the damage as rescue and relief operations continued in the affected areas.
The disaster has claimed at least 162 lives, while more than 500 people remain missing. Nearly 300 of those reported missing are Indian nationals, many of them pilgrims undertaking the Mansarovar Yatra.
Nepal Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, speaking at the NDTV World Anviksha Summit in Kathmandu, described Shah as a leader focused on quick results and efficient delivery of public services.
“He wants results, and he wants them fast. He’s very focused on deliverables,” Khanal said.
According to Khanal, Shah places trust in his ministers, delegates responsibilities and expects measurable outcomes rather than closely supervising every administrative decision.
The flood crisis has also put Nepal’s ability to protect international travellers under scrutiny. Khanal said the government was coordinating with foreign embassies to ensure the safety of overseas nationals and stressed that international visitors were receiving the same attention as Nepali citizens.
He also thanked India for its prompt assistance in the relief effort.
Shah has assured the public that his government is deploying all available resources for rescue and relief operations. In a social media update, he outlined coordination among government agencies, non-governmental organisations and international partners to provide immediate assistance to those affected.
The unfolding disaster has therefore become an early and significant test of Shah’s emphasis on action-oriented governance. His response to the floods, alongside the government’s efforts to locate missing people and assist affected communities and foreign nationals, is likely to shape perceptions of his leadership during the first months of his tenure.
