External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Thursday discussed the Ukraine conflict, its global implications and the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Jaishankar said the two foreign ministers exchanged views on developments related to the Ukraine conflict and also discussed the situation around the strategic waterway.
“A useful conversation with FM Johann Wadephul of Germany. Exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict and its global impact. Also discussed the Strait of Hormuz situation,” Jaishankar posted on X.
The conversation came a day after Jaishankar spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who briefed him on the situation in the Black Sea and discussed efforts to restore and secure freedom of navigation in the region.
Sybiha said the Black Sea situation had become increasingly difficult amid intensified attacks on Ukrainian ports and maritime routes. He said the developments were affecting Ukrainian food exports and posed risks to global food security.
“I underscored that Russia’s attempts to disrupt Ukrainian food exports pose a direct threat to global food security, reaching far beyond our region and putting millions of families worldwide at risk,” Sybiha said in a post on X.
The Ukrainian foreign minister said the two sides also discussed ways to restore and ensure freedom of navigation in the Black Sea, besides reviewing Ukraine-India bilateral cooperation and their mutually beneficial agenda. They agreed to maintain close contact and coordinate upcoming engagements.
Jaishankar, in his response, said their discussion had focused on resuming commerce in the Black Sea and ensuring the safety and security of seafarers and commercial shipping.
“India remains a steadfast advocate of dialogue and diplomacy,” Jaishankar said.
The latest diplomatic engagements come amid continuing international concern over maritime security, commercial shipping and the wider global consequences of conflicts affecting key trade and navigation routes.
