Three FIRs have been registered at Bengaluru’s Basavanagudi Police Station following a clash during an Eid Milad procession on August 26, with eight people taken into custody for questioning, police said on Thursday.
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disturb communal harmony or taking the law into their own hands.
Kharge said no person or group had the right to obstruct another community’s religious celebrations and appealed to people to maintain peace.
“I had clearly appealed earlier that no one should interfere with anyone’s celebrations. Whether Muslim, Hindu or belonging to any other religion, nobody has the right to take the law into their own hands. There is a law, and it is in everyone’s interest to follow it,” he said.
He said the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to practise their respective traditions and warned against attempts to create hatred in society.
“We will have to take legal action against those who try to sow the seeds of hatred in society,” Kharge said.
Three Cases Registered
The incident took place when an Eid Milad procession travelling along N.R. Road towards the YMCA reportedly came into conflict with members of a Hindu organisation. The procession had begun from Kumaraswamy Layout, Konanakunte, Yarab Nagar and Banashankari.
Police said they received a call through the 112 emergency helpline between 3.45 pm and 4 pm reporting that some people had blocked the road. The situation subsequently escalated into a physical altercation.
The first FIR was registered on a complaint by Muslim leader Abdul Razak against Puneeth Kerehalli, Gopi Gowda, Puneeth Gowda, Vinod Nayak and others. They have been booked on allegations including disturbing communal harmony and promoting enmity between groups.
The second FIR names Kamal Pasha, Abubakar Siddique and Syed Anas and includes charges such as attempt to murder and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police said three people have been arrested in connection with this case, while three minors have also been taken into custody.
The third case concerns allegations of blocking a public road and disrupting traffic and names individuals who were present at the scene.
Karnataka State Reserve Police personnel have been deployed as a precaution, while patrolling has been intensified in the area. Senior police officials also reached the spot following the clash.
Police are examining CCTV footage to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify those involved. Complaints from both sides are also being recorded as part of the investigation.
Responding to criticism from the BJP, Kharge said the Opposition was free to make political statements but alleged that attempts were being made to provoke people for political purposes.
“Let the BJP say whatever it wants; that is their job,” he said, referring to an earlier statement attributed to Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka.
Police said the investigation remains underway and further action will be taken on the basis of evidence collected.
