The Calcutta High Court on Thursday declined to grant interim relief to the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over debit restrictions imposed on four party bank accounts at a public sector bank.
The faction, described in the petition as the “original but minority” group of the TMC and led by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, had approached the High Court seeking removal of the debit restrictions.
The four accounts are maintained at the bank’s Harish Mukherjee Road branch. The restrictions were imposed by the bank following directions from the West Bengal Police.
In its plea, the Mamata-led faction argued that access to the accounts was necessary to meet the party’s routine expenses, including payment of salaries to 215 full-time party workers.
The faction also sought a stay on a case registered at the Cybercrime Police Station under the Bidhannagar City Police in North 24 Parganas district. The police case forms the basis for the directions that led to the debit restrictions.
The matter was heard by Justice Saugata Bhattacharya, who declined to issue any immediate direction in favour of the petitioners.
The court directed the West Bengal government to file an affidavit in response. The Mamata-led faction will subsequently file a counter-affidavit.
Justice Bhattacharya said the matter would be taken up for further consideration only after the affidavit and counter-affidavit are filed, following which the court would decide on the issue.
The judge also referred to an earlier matter in which the same bench had permitted partial and conditional de-freezing of four TMC bank accounts maintained with a private sector bank.
