India on Thursday dispatched a second flight carrying 37.5 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) material, medicines and food packets to Nepal as the neighbouring country continued rescue and relief operations following devastating flash floods.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said India remained in close contact with Nepalese authorities and would continue to support the ongoing relief efforts.
“A second flight has just taken off, carrying 37.5 tonnes of HADR material, medicines & food packets for Nepal,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
The latest assistance follows a 10-tonne consignment of HADR material and essential medicines sent by India on Wednesday. The first tranche included emergency relief items such as temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines.
The flash floods in Nepal have caused widespread destruction after heavy rains and a major surge along the Bhote Koshi River. Nepal Police said 162 bodies had been recovered by Thursday morning from downstream districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahu and Nawalparasi. Hundreds of people remained unaccounted for.
India’s relief effort comes as rescue teams continue searching for missing people across the affected areas. According to Nepal’s latest disaster authorities, 826 people were reported missing, including security personnel, residents and tourists.
The assistance reflects India’s continued humanitarian support to Nepal during emergencies and comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah of India’s full support for rescue and relief operations.
India has maintained that it is coordinating closely with Nepalese authorities and will provide further assistance as required.
