The student agitation in Ranchi over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations entered its 20th day on Wednesday, with talks between the protesters and the Jharkhand government failing to break the deadlock over two key demands.
The agitation has continued despite an Assembly gherao, police action and multiple rounds of negotiations. Student groups are seeking cancellation of the 2024 JSSC-CGL examination and a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).
More than 2,000 candidates have already been appointed through the 2024 JSSC-CGL examination and are serving in various government departments. The state government has maintained that cancelling the examination at this stage would not be practical.
Officials have pointed out that allegations concerning the examination have already faced judicial scrutiny before the Jharkhand High Court and the Supreme Court, and that the recruitment process moved ahead following court orders. The state CID is also investigating complaints related to the examination.
Student organisations, however, have questioned the credibility and effectiveness of the CID probe. They contend that the agency failed to place adequate evidence concerning the alleged irregularities before the courts, allowing the recruitment process to continue.
The protesters have also highlighted the arrest of Abhay Tiwari, who was associated with examination outsourcing agency TDAPL. They claim Tiwari worked as a marketing manager with the agency before being selected as a Block Supply Officer through the same examination.
Legal experts, however, have cautioned that an arrest alone does not establish large-scale examination irregularities or provide automatic grounds for cancellation. The issue will ultimately depend on the findings of the investigation and subsequent judicial proceedings.
The students’ second demand is a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in all disputed JPSC and JSSC examinations. The government has instead proposed a high-level committee headed by a retired judge to examine the allegations.
Student leaders have rejected the proposal, saying they have lost confidence in state-level inquiries and want an investigation by an independent central agency. They maintain that a CBI probe is necessary to restore public confidence in the recruitment system.
With neither side willing to concede on the two principal demands, the student-government standoff continues into its third week.
