Ahmedabad City Police have detained 13 people under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA) and sent them to different jails across Gujarat as part of an ongoing crackdown on activities allegedly affecting public order, officials said on Wednesday.
The action, carried out over two days, targeted people accused of bootlegging, theft, assault, cheating and other offences.
The move followed directions from Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut to intensify combing operations and vehicle checks across the city to maintain law and order and prevent untoward incidents.
According to a statement issued by the Prevention of Crime Branch, PASA proceedings were initiated against the 13 individuals. Five were categorised as alleged bootleggers, while eight were classified as “dangerous” persons in police records.
The bootlegging cases relate to the alleged illegal possession, transportation and sale of country-made liquor, Indian-made foreign liquor and beer without the required permits.
Among those detained under the dangerous category are Rajjan Nai, who is accused in motorcycle theft and chain-snatching cases; Pankaj Solanki, who faces cases involving alleged assault, threats, weapons and property damage; and Babubhai Machhar, who is accused of breaking into a warehouse and a shop and stealing copper scrap, wires, brass, pipes and cutting equipment.
Police also detained Vishnuprasad Pandit alias Bangali Arjunprasad Ravibhai, accused of allegedly breaking shop shutters and stealing cash, and Bharat Vanzara, who faces cases involving alleged assault, serious injuries, house trespass, property damage, threats and use of a knife.
Himanshu alias Rocky Panchal was also detained. Police allege that he falsely posed as a police sub-inspector, gained a complainant’s confidence and obtained money through cheating.
The alleged bootleggers identified by police include Ramesh Khileri, Ganpatbhai Talpada, Rohit Kalal, Jagmalram Beniwal, Tej Singh alias Talo Vakilsingh Dabhi, Vinod alias Bhau Sonar and Nileshkumar Parmar.
Police said the accused were allegedly involved in transporting, handling or selling liquor without valid permits.
The Ahmedabad Police said combing and late-night vehicle-checking operations would continue across different parts of the city, including action against history-sheeters and efforts to curb the distribution of liquor and narcotics.
