Religious leaders in Vrindavan have welcomed the ISKCON temple’s decision to enforce a dress code for devotees, describing it as an effort to uphold traditional values, cultural decorum and the sanctity of the place of worship.
The ISKCON Temple in Vrindavan has made modest attire mandatory for visitors and prohibited short or immodest clothing on its premises. Notice boards have been installed at the entrance gates informing devotees about the dress code and other visitor guidelines, including restrictions related to photography.
Kalki Ram, President of the Ramadal Trust, supported the move and said temples should have clear dress codes as some visitors arrive in attire that, in his view, does not meet standards of decency.
“A dress code should be implemented because it is often seen that people come to temples wearing clothes that violate decency,” he told IANS. At the same time, he said the ISKCON temple needed improvements in its functioning and referred to the temple’s devotional practices.
Sant Satyendra Das Vedanti also backed the decision and called for similar guidelines at temples and monasteries across the country wherever they can be implemented.
“It is a very good decision,” he said, adding that such measures could help maintain religious decorum amid what he described as growing instances of “impurity and indecency” in society.
Mahant Nirmal Giri of Kailash Temple said appropriate clothing and conduct have traditionally been considered important when visiting religious places.
“According to our tradition, when a devotee visits a temple, they should do so in a dignified and cultured manner,” he said, stressing that visitors should pay attention to both their attire and behaviour at temples and other places of worship.
Vrindavan, in Uttar Pradesh, is among Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage centres and is traditionally associated with Lord Krishna’s childhood. The town is home to numerous temples dedicated to Krishna and Radha and attracts devotees from across India and abroad.
