Fresh FIR names three in probe into RG Kar victim’s hurried cremation

Kolkata, August 11, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Barrackpore Police Commissionerate has registered a fresh FIR over allegations concerning the hurried cremation of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder victim in August 2024, with three persons named in the complaint filed by her father.

The case was registered at Khardah Police Station in North 24 Parganas district against former Trinamool Congress MLA and former Assembly Chief Whip Nirmal Ghosh, Panihati Municipality councillor Somnath Dey and Sanjeev Mukherjee, a neighbour of the victim’s family.

The fresh investigation follows directions issued by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at a programme in Panihati on August 8, held to mark the second death anniversary of the junior doctor.

The victim was found dead in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. Investigators subsequently established that she had been raped and murdered the previous night.

Her family and junior doctors had earlier raised questions over the alleged haste with which the post-mortem and cremation were carried out. They had alleged that her body was cremated at a Panihati facility without the signature of any family member and that no cremation fee was charged.

The complaint alleges that the three persons named in the FIR supervised the cremation and suggests that the haste may have been intended to rule out the possibility of a second autopsy.

Announcing the fresh probe, Adhikari said the circumstances surrounding the cremation, including the absence of a family member’s signature and the alleged waiver of charges, required renewed investigation. He directed the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to initiate a separate case apart from the CBI probe being monitored by the court.

Meanwhile, state Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee had on August 7 announced an independent investigation by the Health Department. He said the department would share its findings with the CBI and question people who visited the crime scene before and after the incident, along with college professors.
