Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee faced protests from BJP workers and supporters on Sunday while visiting the family of a Trinamool Congress worker who allegedly died in police custody in Kanchrapara, North 24 Parganas district.
Protesters surrounded Banerjee’s vehicle and allegedly threw mud, a torn slipper and stones at the car while raising slogans against her. Police personnel had to surround the vehicle as it passed through the Bijpur area.
Banerjee alleged that large stones and bricks were hurled at her vehicle in the presence of police personnel. She accused the state administration of failing to ensure her security and alleged that the police were protecting BJP supporters.
“Large stones were hurled at my car by anti-social elements, right in front of the police,” Banerjee told reporters, adding that she could have suffered serious injuries had the vehicle windows been open.
The BJP, however, alleged that Banerjee had visited Kanchrapara with the intention of creating tension and claimed that local residents were protesting against her visit.
Banerjee also accused the BJP-led state government and Police Minister Suvendu Adhikari of allowing the law-and-order situation to deteriorate. She alleged that the incident was orchestrated by BJP supporters and said her party would file a complaint.
Trinamool Congress MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Dola Sen, who accompanied her, also criticised the state administration. Kalyan Banerjee alleged that the government was using the police and allowing criminal elements to operate.
The former Trinamool Congress councillor of Kanchrapara Municipality, Jenny Sharma Keot, had alleged that her husband, Birju Keot, died after being tortured in police custody. The family claimed that he was beaten while his hands and feet were tied.
According to a source at Halishahar police station, Birju was found unwell in custody after midnight on Friday and was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Kalyani, where doctors declared him dead.
The exact cause of death remains unclear. While an initial possibility of a heart attack has been mentioned, police sources said the cause would be established only after the autopsy report. There was no immediate official response to the family’s allegations of custodial assault.
After meeting the bereaved family, Banerjee said that there was “no such thing as law and order” left in the state.
