Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, while greeting the tribal community on World Tribal Day, alleged that the greatest injustice in independent India had been inflicted on tribal people, whose traditional rights over water, forests and land were taken away and transferred to large corporations.
Kejriwal claimed that while other communities had progressed over the past 75 years, the tribal community had been left behind because successive governments failed to protect its interests. He said the AAP was committed to fighting for tribal rights.
“In the last 75 years, the greatest injustice has been done to the tribal community. The country progressed in these 75 years, people from all other communities progressed, but the tribal community was left behind,” Kejriwal said.
He alleged that the community’s natural resources had been taken away and handed over to big companies, while asserting that water, forests and land were the traditional rights of tribal people.
Highlighting the AAP’s role in the issue, Kejriwal said the party and its leaders had faced legal action while raising concerns related to tribal rights.
“The AAP is fighting for your rights, and our leaders have gone to jail many times for this struggle. Chaitar Vasava is a son and brother of the tribal community. He has gone to jail I do not know how many times to secure the rights of the tribal community,” he said.
Kejriwal also questioned the implementation of the Provision of Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, commonly known as PESA, which seeks to empower Gram Sabhas in Scheduled Areas.
“These people brought the PESA law, but they did not implement it. They take all these decisions without consulting the community and the Gram Sabha,” he alleged.
Referring to AAP tribal leader Chaitar Vasava, Kejriwal claimed that he was in jail in connection with a false case because of his efforts to raise issues concerning the tribal community.
“Today, Chaitar Vasava is in jail because he is fighting for the tribal community. Pray that he comes out soon,” Kejriwal said.
