A 29-year-old woman from Bihar gave birth to twin babies on Thursday, delivering one in a moving cab and the other after reaching a hospital in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area. Doctors said the mother and both newborns are healthy.
According to hospital authorities, the woman, a resident of Darbhanga, had been staying at a relative’s home in Salt Lake since July. She went into labour on Thursday morning, prompting her family to immediately arrange a cab to take her to the hospital.
However, before the vehicle could reach the hospital, she delivered a baby girl inside the moving cab.
After reaching a Salt Lake hospital, the woman was taken to the emergency department, where doctors examined the newborn and provided immediate medical care. The baby was subsequently shifted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for monitoring.
Meanwhile, the mother delivered her second child, a boy, under medical supervision in the emergency department. He was also shifted to the NICU for observation and specialised care.
Hospital authorities said the timely intervention of doctors, nurses and emergency department staff helped ensure the safety of the mother and both babies.
Hospital doctor Paramita Kanjilal Chakraborty said the medical team acted quickly after the woman arrived and took necessary decisions to manage the delivery.
“One baby was already born in the cab, while the other was born safely in the hospital. Due to timely treatment and quick decisions, the mother and both babies are now healthy,” she said.
Doctors said neither the mother nor the newborns developed any major complications, attributing the positive outcome to the prompt medical attention provided during and after the deliveries.
The family members expressed relief after being informed that the mother and both newborns were in stable condition.
