Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Punjab, has been appointed as a Member of the India–Switzerland Parliamentary Group, aimed at strengthening bilateral engagement and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Dr. Sahney’s appointment comes at an important time following the conclusion of the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is the largest economy.
During his engagements, Dr. Sahney will also interact with senior representatives of United Nations and various multilateral organisations headquartered in Geneva, including the WHO, WTO and ILO, to promote cooperation in global health, trade, labour and sustainable development.
Dr. Sahney informed that Switzerland is a key strategic partner for India and a global hub of advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, innovation, financial services and sustainable technologies. It is among India’s leading European investors and a gateway for high-technology collaboration, research and vocational training partnerships.
Bilateral trade between India and Switzerland stood at USD 23.35 billion last year, with strong potential in pharmaceuticals, machinery, chemicals, fintech, clean energy and high-value manufacturing, alongside growing tourism and people-to-people ties.
Dr. Sahney stated that he will work to further cement India–Switzerland relations, particularly in technology, industrial collaboration and investments, and facilitate Swiss partnerships and joint ventures in Punjab in sectors such as precision engineering, agro-processing, clean energy, cold chain and MSMEs.
