Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Liechtenstein’s Hereditary Prince Alois and Princess Sofia at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Tuesday, as India and the European principality seek to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, technology and other areas.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), discussions between Modi and Prince Alois are expected to cover trade and investment, science, technology and innovation, people-to-people exchanges, and regional and global developments.
The meeting comes amid growing economic engagement following the operationalisation of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) in 2025.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on Prince Alois and discussed bilateral relations and opportunities arising from the trade agreement.
Describing the partnership as gaining momentum, Jaishankar said in a post on X that the agreement had opened up opportunities for stronger cooperation across several sectors. He also expressed confidence that the Prince’s meeting with Modi would help advance bilateral ties.
Prince Alois received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu and the Prime Minister welcomed him.
Describing the visit as Liechtenstein’s first state visit to India, the Prince said it reflected the importance his country attached to relations with New Delhi. He thanked the Indian leadership for the invitation and warm reception.
Prince Alois described the India-EFTA TEPA as a significant milestone and said Liechtenstein wanted to build on the momentum generated by the agreement.
He identified innovation, advanced manufacturing, financial services, education and technology as areas with considerable potential for expanded economic cooperation, highlighting the complementary strengths of the two countries.
The Prince arrived in New Delhi from Vadodara, Gujarat, on Monday. His programme on Tuesday also includes meetings with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary, followed by a meeting with President Murmu, who is scheduled to host an official banquet in his honour.
The MEA said the visit is expected to strengthen bilateral engagement and open up partnerships in additional areas of mutual interest.
