Punjab Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education and Research Minister Dr. Balbir Singh on Wednesday met the first patient to undergo a successful kidney transplant at Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, and his wife, who donated her kidney.
The transplant was performed successfully on September 10, 2026, at the government hospital. The 37-year-old patient from Romana Patti, Namol, in Sangrur district, had been suffering from kidney failure caused by Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis (MPGN). His 29-year-old wife donated her kidney for the transplant.
Both the patient and his wife have recovered well and have been discharged from the hospital, the Health Minister said. During his interaction with the couple, Dr. Balbir Singh appreciated the wife’s courage and described her decision to donate a kidney to her husband as an inspiring example.
The couple thanked the Punjab Government, the Health Minister and the medical team at Government Rajindra Hospital, saying the treatment had given them a new lease of life.
Dr. Balbir Singh said eligible patients suffering from kidney disease and other serious ailments should approach government hospitals in time instead of raising funds for treatment. He said the Punjab Government would bear the entire treatment cost of eligible patients under the Chief Minister Health Scheme.
He noted that kidney transplantation at private hospitals generally costs around Rs. 8 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh, while the procedure performed at Rajindra Hospital was provided free of cost under the government scheme.
The Minister described the start of kidney transplant services at Government Rajindra Hospital as a significant achievement for Punjab’s public healthcare and medical education system. He said super-specialist doctors were providing advanced treatment facilities at the hospital.
Dr. Balbir Singh also said a 300-bed Trauma Centre was being established at Rajindra Hospital and a 50-bed Critical Care Unit was at the final stage. Once operational, the critical care facility is expected to reduce referrals of critically ill patients to other hospitals because of shortages of ICU beds.
The Minister congratulated the medical team that carried out the transplant. The team included transplant specialist Prof. Dr. Sarbpreet Singh; urology specialists Prof. Dr. Harbhupinder Singh Sandhu and Dr. Suparn Sharma; nephrology specialist Dr. Thakurveer Kohli; and anaesthesia specialist Dr. Tanveer Kundra.
He also appreciated Dr. R.P.S. Sibia, Director-Principal of the Medical College and Head of the Department of Medicine, and Dr. Vishal Chopra, Medical Superintendent of Rajindra Hospital, along with the entire medical team.
“This marks a new chapter in the history of government medical services in Punjab.
