Trinamool Congress MP and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has triggered fresh political discussion with an Instagram post showing a visible scar around his eye while he is in the United States for medical treatment.
The Diamond Harbour MP, who has been in the US for more than 10 days for eye treatment and consultations, shared a close-up photograph of his face on his Instagram story. The picture prominently showed his eye and a scar. The accompanying caption read: “The scar tells you I’ve been through something. The eyes tell you I’m nowhere near done!”
The post has prompted speculation in political circles over whether the message was solely a reference to his medical ordeal or carried a wider political message. Some observers have interpreted the words against the backdrop of Banerjee’s long medical history and his continuing role in West Bengal politics. Banerjee himself has not indicated that the post was intended as a political statement.
Banerjee sustained a serious injury to his left eye in a road accident in 2016. He has subsequently undergone multiple surgeries in India and abroad and has periodically travelled overseas for specialised medical consultation and treatment.
His latest US visit followed a legal battle over permission to travel abroad. The Calcutta High Court had initially declined permission, following which Banerjee approached the Supreme Court challenging the order.
The Supreme Court subsequently permitted him to travel abroad for three weeks in September for medical treatment. The court directed that details concerning his doctor, hospital, accommodation, flight arrangements and travel schedule be provided to the concerned authorities in advance. He is required to return to India within the permitted three-week period after completing his treatment.
The social media post has therefore drawn renewed attention to both his medical treatment and political activities.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, took a dig at the TMC leader’s US visit. He said, “It is being heard that Abhishek is renting a villa in a luxurious place in New Jersey.”
Ritabrata questioned the need for renting a villa in connection with eye treatment.
