Chandigarh, September 16, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (Reorganised) president Giani Harpreet Singh has opposed the new recruitment arrangement for health services posts in Chandigarh, alleging that it undermines Punjab’s historical and administrative rights in the Union Territory.

Reacting to the new system introduced by the Central Government and Chandigarh Administration, Giani Harpreet Singh said that if health department posts were being allocated in a 40:30:30 ratio among Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab, respectively, the arrangement would adversely affect Punjab’s share in government employment.

He argued that Chandigarh was not merely an administrative Union Territory but also a sensitive issue linked to the reorganisation of Punjab. He said the Centre should take Punjab’s historical rights and past agreements into account before introducing major policy changes concerning Chandigarh.

Giani Harpreet Singh said any continued reduction in employment opportunities for Punjab’s youth would not be acceptable. He alleged that Punjab’s concerns over its rights concerning Chandigarh and its status as the state’s capital had repeatedly been overlooked.

He demanded a fresh review of the Chandigarh Health Services Rules, 2026, particularly the provisions relating to recruitment rights associated with Punjab. He also called for the Punjab Government and representatives of the state to be consulted before any new arrangement affecting Punjab’s interests is finalised.

The SAD (Reorganised) leader further demanded that any measure that, according to him, weakens Punjab’s historical and administrative rights in Chandigarh be stopped. He also sought publication of complete details of the new recruitment arrangement, including the number of posts and the share available to Punjab.

“No new arrangement in Chandigarh can be accepted at the cost of Punjab’s rights. To safeguard Punjab’s rights, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Reorganised) will raise its voice on every constitutional and democratic platform. I appeal to the Central Government to understand the sentiments of the people of Punjab, reconsider the matter immediately and ensure justice for Punjab,” he said.

The statement was issued to the media by the party’s media in-charge, S. Tajinder Singh Pannu.

The Chandigarh Administration’s website currently lists draft recruitment rules for Group-A General Duty Medical Officer posts in the Health Department as having been issued for stakeholder comments in August 2026.
