Guwahati, September 16, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal has expressed confidence that his party will win the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, while taking aim at both the BJP and Congress over their political approaches.

Speaking in Hojai on Monday, Ajmal said the AIUDF would focus its campaign on what he described as “humanity” and asserted that both the BJP and Congress would be defeated.

“The BJP talks about Hindus, while the Congress does not talk about the concerns of either Hindus or Muslims. We talk about humanity, so we are fully confident that we will win, and the other two parties will lose,” Ajmal said.

Ajmal, who is also the AIUDF MLA from Binnakandi, is scheduled to file his nomination papers for the Nagaon bypoll at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The party announced his candidature on September 15, a day before the deadline for filing nominations.

The by-election has been necessitated by the resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, whose resignation from the Lok Sabha was accepted with effect from March 20. Bordoloi subsequently joined the BJP and contested the Dispur Assembly constituency.

The BJP has fielded former IAS officer and former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Devasish Sharma, while Congress has nominated former Batadraba MLA Sibamoni Bora.

With Ajmal entering the contest, the Nagaon bypoll has emerged as a closely watched electoral battle involving the BJP, Congress and AIUDF, with the AIUDF seeking to strengthen its position in the constituency.

The AIUDF chief has positioned his party’s campaign around issues concerning people across communities, contrasting its approach with what he described as the BJP’s focus on Hindus and the Congress’ handling of community-related concerns.

The Nagaon seat has political significance for the Congress, which won the constituency in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The bypoll is scheduled for October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9.

Ajmal has reiterated his confidence in the AIUDF’s prospects as campaigning gathers pace, setting the stage for a closely watched contest in central Assam.
