India on Wednesday summoned Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi and lodged a strong protest after a Pakistani naval unit collided with a unit of the Indian Navy in international waters.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described the conduct of the Pakistani naval units as “unacceptable and unprofessional” and said the incident did not result in any major damage.
“The Charge d’Affaires of the High Commission for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in New Delhi was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs today and a strong protest was lodged with him over the unacceptable and unprofessional conduct of Pakistani naval units at sea that led to a collision with a unit of the Indian Navy,” the MEA said in a statement.
According to the MEA, the incident took place in international waters and the conduct of the Pakistani naval ship was in direct contravention of Article 10 of the April 1991 Agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements.
Indian government sources separately said the Pakistani vessel had approached the Indian Navy ship at high speed and manoeuvred in what they described as an unsafe and unprofessional manner before the collision. The Indian Navy unit was reportedly on a routine surveillance mission.
The MEA said Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires was advised to convey to the concerned authorities that all military units should exercise due care and respect the relevant agreements between the two countries to prevent any recurrence.
India has also instructed its Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The incident comes amid already sensitive India-Pakistan relations, with New Delhi formally raising the matter through diplomatic channels following the maritime collision.
