Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday said the agreement on the long-pending Kishau Multipurpose Project among six states will significantly improve water availability in the Yamuna and directly benefit Haryana.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, with Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi participating. The pact clears a major hurdle in taking forward the project, which had remained pending for years.
Speaking to the media after a meeting chaired by Shah, Saini thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah and Patil for facilitating consensus among the participating states. He said the MoU was a major achievement and would pave the way for the project’s implementation.
Saini said Haryana has a 48 per cent share in Yamuna waters and would therefore directly benefit from the increased availability of water. He added that the Renuka Ji and Lakhwar projects are already under construction, while work on Kishau is expected to begin soon.
According to Saini, Haryana’s combined share from the Renuka Ji, Lakhwar and Kishau projects is expected to be around 1,143 million cubic metres (MCM). Together, the three projects are projected to increase water availability by 2,676 cusecs, of which Haryana’s share would be around 1,280 cusecs.
The Kishau Multipurpose Project is proposed on the Tons River, a major tributary of the Yamuna along the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border. The project is intended to support water supply, irrigation and hydropower generation and is expected to contribute to improved water management in the Yamuna basin.
